The Australian Boomers came up short against Brazil on Wednesday night, falling to a 90-86 defeat at Rod Laver Arena. 

After putting on an offensive clinic on Monday night against Venezuela, the Boomers struggled to find their shooting touch, connecting on just 41 percent from the field and 26 percent (9-of-34) from the 3-point line.

Taking a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter the Boomers were outscored 26-15 in the final frame as Brazil held their nerve down the stretch to pull off the comeback win. 

Four Boomers players scored in double figures on the night led by 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists from Josh Giddey, while Patty Mills added 11, shooting just 2-of-12 from deep. Nick Kay and Duop Reath finished with 10 points apiece. 

Bruno Caboclo led Brazil with a strong 20-point, 12-rebound double-double on 9-of-14 from the field, while Vitor Benite added 17 points off the bench.

7:21 p.m. — Giddey can't get the triple to go and Brazil come up with the ball. That's game. 

7:19 p.m. — The Boomers turn up the heat on Brazil's defence on the final possession and almost force the shot clock violation, but Caboclo gets off the shot in time to make it a four-point lead. 

7:17 p.m. — Ingles gets the late whistle and goes to the free throw line. He buries both and cuts the lead to two points. Here we go!

7:15 p.m. — Caboclo with another jam and Brazil make it 88-81. Can the Boomers fight back with under 90 seconds to go?

7:13 p.m. — Mills goes 1-of-2 at the line. Boomers ball. Brazil lead 86-81.

7:10 p.m. — De Paula swipes at Patty Mills with the jersey grab and the Boomers are calling on the officials to call the unsportsmanlike foul. The officials review the play and Mills will shoot free throws and retain possession. Huge swing call there for the Boomers. 

7:07 p.m. — Josh Gidd3y for three! And we're tied up once again at 80-80. 

7:05 p.m. — Another defensive breakdown for the Boomers on the on-ball screen, leaving Dos Anjos wide open for the jam. Brazil lead 80-77.

7:04 p.m. — Benite drills the triple to give Brazil the lead once again, 78-77.

7:00 p.m. — ANother defensive breakdown for the Boomers on the switch as Brazil get another open look from the corner as Santos connects. Boomers lead 77-71.

6:58 p.m. — Cabocolo continues to dominate in the paint, throwing down another jam for Brazil. he's up to 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

6:51 p.m. — EXUM DUNK FEST! Another slam for Dante as Mills pushes the pace to find him in transition. Boomers lead 67-61.

6:48 p.m. — The Boomers are doing a much better job picking apart Brazil's 2-3 zone as Ingles finds Mills in the corner for another triple to make it 61-58.

6:46 p.m. — Triple-double watch for Giddey. He's up to 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists tonight.

6:45 p.m. — Another Josh Giddey offensive rebound. he gets two bites at the cherry and lays it in. Boomers lead 58-53. Timeout Brazil. 

6:43 p.m. — PATTY PARTY! He connects on his first triple of the night to give the Boomers a 56-53 lead, their first of the night. 

6:41 p.m. — Josh Giddey's size in the paint is giving the Boomers and edge. He rips down another defensive rebound that leads to a Thybulle triple. Giddey has a team-high seven rebounds tonight. 

6:39 p.m. — Patty Thrills! He hits Reath with the slick behind-the-back dime for an easy finish. Brazil's lead down to 49-47.

6:37 p.m. — The Boomers are back with their starting 5 of Giddey, Mills, Thybulle, Kay, and Reath to start the second half.

The Boomers rally in the second quarter, outscoring Brazil 28-20 to go into the break trailing by just two points. 

The defensive effort is slowly ticking up for the Boomers, but their wayward shooting has made life tough tonight. They're just 3-of-17 from the 3-point line, while Brazil hs connected on 8-of-19 from deep.

Josh Giddey leads Australia with nine points, five rebounds, and two assists, while Nick Kay has eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.

6:11 p.m. — Mathief Thybulle stepping things up on the defensive end for the Boomers, reading the defence to force the turnover. They'll need more of that energy in the second half.

In the lead-up to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Australia will face Brazil on Wednesday, Aug. 16. The game is scheduled to start around 5:30 p.m. AEST at Rod Laver Arena. 

The game was previously set to tip-off at 7:45 p.m., but it was brought forward to avoid a clash with the Matildas' FIFA World Cup semi-final against England.

Viewers can live stream the tournament on Courtside 1891, FIBA's official streaming service, which is also available to purchase via the NBA App. It offers two subscriptions.

Australian Boomers roster for 2023 World Cup 

Coming into the pre-World Cup games, the Boomers are sporting an extended roster of 13 players.

The initial squad consisted of 18 players. Five players were cut following the training camp in Cairns: Thon Maker, Sam Froling, Keanu Pinder, Matthew Dellavedova and Will McDowell-White.
