Wests Tigers veteran James Roberts under investigation following balcony breach at Gold Coast hotel image

An incident involving James Roberts has been reported to Queensland Health after the Wests Tigers veteran was filmed on the balcony of a Gold Coast hotel on Wednesday.

Fed-up Queensland health officials last week imposed a balcony ban on NRL players and their families who are in quarantine after relocating from Sydney following a recent COVID-19 outbreak.

After players and families were caught breaching protocols by passing items to each other from their balconies, an order was sent for all balcony doors to be taped shut.

But Channel 7 on Tuesday night aired footage of Roberts, who is in quarantine away from his Tigers team-mates after being deemed a close contact of an individual exposed to COVID-19, outside on his balcony.

The Wests Tigers said in a joint statement with the NRL shortly after the footage was aired: “The NRL has today reported a breach of the current balcony directive to Queensland Health by Wests Tigers player James Roberts.

“The NRL and Wests Tigers are providing James with additional wellbeing support to assist him in coping with quarantine and will continue to work closely with Queensland Health.”

Queensland Health last week warned the NRL it was one breach away from being booted out of the state, throwing the entire season into jeopardy.

However, it is understood officials may soften their stance given Roberts’ mental health history.

The former Panthers, Titans, Broncos and Rabbitohs flyer voluntarily entered a mental health facility last April as he struggled to cope with the challenges of lockdown.

It was his third stint in a rehabilitation clinic since making his NRL debut in 2011.

Roberts has played 11 games in his first campaign with the Tigers but has not been cited since Round 16 and will miss Friday’s Round 29 clash against the New Zealand Warriors.
