Phil Gould ends Twitter boycott after confirming player agent plans image

Phil ‘Gus’ Gould has ended his 340-day absence from Twitter less than 72 hours after it was revealed the rugby league heavyweight is planning to launch a new career as a player agent.

The 61-year-old was among the NRL’s most prolific tweeters, entertaining his 10,000-plus followers with his musings on all-things rugby league, cricket and a range of other topics and interacting with fans.

But Gould - not for the first time - shut off his Twitter account last March after copping a torrent of abuse from fans when he dared to criticise the popular Supercoach fantasy game.

The former first-grade captain, premiership-winning coach and long-serving Channel 9 commentator was still serving at Penrith’s general manager of football when he sent his last tweet on March 8.

But after confirming a bombshell report he plans to join the player agent ranks in April, the man they call Gus made a welcome return to the social media site on Tuesday night.

Gould is in Samoa to launch the World Nines tournament scheduled for October and tweeted twice about the event before retweeting Channel 9’s coverage of the launch.

Meanwhile, Gould on Tuesday rejected suggestions his current job as Channel 9 pundit and new role as an agent will create a conflict of interest.

He also insisted he has no plans to steal high-profile clients from existing player managers, declaring he plans to fill his stable with the next generation of NRL stars.
