Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy says NRL should introduce Golden Try image

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy says the NRL should consider introducing golden try to decide tied games.

Bellamy's side was edged 11-10 by Manly after Daly Cherry-Evans slotted a golden point field goal in on of the games of the season so far.

But before DCE's successful kick, both sides had sprayed several attempts wide, which has become a common occurence in extra-time.

The same thing happened when the Broncos drew with the Warriors at Suncorp a few weeks ago, and many fans and pundits are fed up with the spectacle of long-range, speculative field goal attempts.

Speaking on Monday after the just the third loss his side has suffered this season, Bellamy called for golden try to replace golden point.

But he also didn't rule out settling for a point apiece if the scores are level after 80 minutes.

“Do we need to take it to golden try?” Bellamy asked on NRL360.

“Both teams now just basically look to go straight to the middle of the field and get in a good field position to kick a field goal.

“I think when it first came in it was all about excitement and we’d see tired bodies out there.

“At the end of the day, I’m a bit old school, and I think there’s nothing wrong with a draw.

"But having said that if we’d won on Saturday night I probably wouldn’t be saying the same thing.

“But if we’re going to hold onto it perhaps golden try would add a little bit more excitement.”

Golden try is a similar system to the one used in the NFL.

In NFL's overtime, the game ends when one team scores a touchdown. If a field goal is scored, the other team is afforded one posession to either score a levelling field goal, or a touchdown to win.

Under Bellamy's proposal, a try in golden time would end the match, but the game would continue if a field goal is scored.
