Newcastle Knights legend Andrew Johns said he would consider taking up a job with the struggling club, but didn't readily jump at the side's CEO Phil Gardner's offer.
Johns has been highly critical of the Knights over the past five weeks, hitting out at underperforming players and at the handling of Nathan Brown's departure.
The Knights were riding high earlier in the season, but have slid down the ladder and now have no chance of making the top eight.
Johns said the backroom manouvering that saw Brown depart with just two weeks left in the season sabotaged any hopes the Knights had of sneaking into the finals.

In the aftermath of Joey's tirade, Knights boss Gardner offered Johns a job saying he could have "any role he wants."
Johns didn't exactly jump at the idea.
"I don't know, obviously I'd have to give it a lot of thought," he said on his Freddy and the Eighth podcast alongside Brad Fittler.
"I live in Sydney now and I've got a young family so takes up a lot of my time.
"I'd have to sit down with my family and have a chat about it.
"I understand the boss said they could pick any role, so I'd like to go up there as a CEO, as long as I only have to turn up twice a month. I'll work from home.
"I might go up, I might dust off the boots and make a comeback, how does that sound?"
Fittler pressed Joey, saying "the town needs you, brother."
Johns also has a busy media career, but has worked as a halves coach for various clubs over the past 10 years.
