NRL boss Todd Greenberg: 'I expect a lot better' image

Todd Greenberg feels your pain, NRL fans.

The besieged NRL boss says he shares the disappointment of disgruntled rugby league supporters after the latest officiating debacle in Friday’s Cronulla-Canberra clash led to widespread calls for his own resignation.

Already under fire for his controversial refereeing crackdown that marred the first 14 rounds of the competition, Greenberg’s seat got even hotter thanks to touch judge Ricky MacFarlane on Friday night.

In case you missed it, MacFarlane raised his flag when he thought he spotted a Jesse Ramien knock on but play was allowed to continue and The NRL Bunker inexplicably allowed Sione Katoa’s 58th-minute try to stand.

The Raiders lost the game 28-24 and are now almost certain to miss the NRL finals.

Ricky Stuart blew up after the game and declared his Raiders ‘get treated differently’ by referees in an interview on ABC Radio on Saturday morning.

Responding to the latest furor caused by his sputtering referees department, Greenberg left the door open to an off-season shake-up but says his focus is eliminating the ‘big errors’ ahead of the NRL finals.

“The real focus today has to be improving the performance of the people there,” Greenberg told The Sunday Telegraph.

“… What we are seeing is human error. That happens in every job. But we have to do better.’’

“… So I expect a lot better than what was served up in that game.”

Referees boss Bernard Sutton has copped it from all angles throughout his first season in the job.

Greenberg refused to rule out a shake-up after the season, leaving Sutton 10 weeks to avoid the axe.
