Rugby league Immortal Andrew 'Joey' Johns has slammed Valentine Holmes as well as other NRL players who consider moving to the US to chase a dream of playing a different sport - namely NFL.

After rumours began to circulate earlier in the week that Holmes was looking to return to rugby league next season, Johns was none too pleased with the news.

The 24-year old's impending move to the North Queensland Cowboys angered Joey and he said he believes players of that ilk should stay in the 13-man game.

“One of the best we’ve seen in ages, Jarryd Hayne, went over and wasn’t successful,” Johns said on Freddy And The Eighth.

“Valentine Holmes, an amazing athlete, a freakish athlete, didn’t make it. Play rugby league.

“They go over there for 18 months and waste 18 months and not make it. You cost yourself a lot of money.”

With a move to Townsville on the horizon, it means that either Jake Clifford or Scott Drinkwater will miss out next season if Holmes was to sign.

And when asked whether the former Sharks superstar could fix the problems at the Cowboys, Johns wasn't so sure.

“No, I don’t think he can” he said.

“He will come back and play fullback - they’ve got Michael Morgan, they’ve got Jake Clifford, and they’ve got Scott Drinkwater, so who plays in the halves?

“I’d say they will go Morgan at halfback and Drinkwater at five-eighth, so young Clifford might have to play second fiddle.”

It will be an interesting few months heading into next year's NRL season - but there is no doubting the talent and popularity that Holmes has.
