Early developments at the Daytona 500 made one thing clear: Hendrick Motorsports had the cars to beat. However, the race came down to a one-lap run to victory.

Not that it was a surprise, since Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson started on the front row. And Dale Earnhardt Jr. was right there with them as the Great American Race neared the halfway point.

SN's Jeff Owens is on the scene at Daytona, where the 57th running of the race is the first event of the 2015 Sprint Cup season.

The race was run without Kurt Busch, under NASCAR suspension; and Kyle Busch, injured in Saturday's Xfinity Series season opener.

Tony Stewart's 17th attempt to win the 500 came to an end after 41 laps when he lost control of his car and crash into the wall. Stewart backed his car to the garage for major repairs and was next-to-last as the race reached Lap 100. Only Landon Cassill, whose car lost its engine, was behind him on the scoreboard.

Stewart finally got back on the track on Lap 108. But he day ended with 72 laps on his battered car.
