Australian racing driver Oscar Piastri has won another prestigious motorsport award, named the Autosport Rookie of the Year.

Piastri - who is currently an Alpine F1 reserve driver - received the honour at the Autosport Awards held at Grosvenor House in the United Kingdom.

It is the second year in a row the 20-year-old has claimed the award, which is open to drivers competing in their first season in a given category.

He won the 2021 Formula 2 championship in his first season, beating F1-turned-Indycar driver Romain Grosjean, Haas F1's Mick Schumacher, and Le Mans Series champion Yifei Ye for Autosport's prize.

His Formula 3 victory in 2020 won him the award last year.

The young Australian is among notable company, with previous winners including F1 champions Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel, Jenson Button, as well as current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and fellow Australian Mark Webber.

Piastri also claimed the Sir Jack Brabham Award last month, which recognises outstanding achievement by an Australian on the international stage.

Speaking at the Autosport award ceremony, he looked ahead to his future as an F1 reserve driver.

"Thank you to everybody who voted, it was a great season and it's looking like a different year for me this year, obviously," Piastri said.

"On the sidelines for the majority of it, but I'm looking forward to the opportunities ahead."

Piastri is contracted as Alpine's reserve driver for 2022, providing cover for Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.

Many have questioned why the reigning F2 champion was not given a seat for the upcoming F1 season, with Alfa Romeo selecting fellow Alpine junior Guanyu Zhou over the Australian.

Zhou finished in third place in the F2 2021 standings, 69.5 points behind Piastri.

Alpine will launch its 2022 car later in February, with Haas the only F1 team to reveal their next-gen car for the upcoming season.

The 2022 Formula One World Championship begins in Bahrain on March 18-20.
