Robert Whittaker has continued his rise up the middleweight ranks at UFC on Fox on Sunday morning (AEST), defeating Jacare Souza by TKO at 3:28 of the second round of the pair's bout.

It was a great performance by the Australian, who has become a serious contender in the 185-pound division.

It appeared Souza had Whittaker when he had his back in the early stages of the bout, but Whittaker somehow got the fight back to the feet.

After that, the Australian went to work. Souza had no answer for Whittaker's striking.

The beginning of the end started as Whittaker landed a straight right hand which dropped Souza who made it back to his feet.

Whittaker smelled blood though connecting on another straight right followed by a head kick.

Moments later, the Aussie landed another right hand to drop Souza and after a series of vicious ground and pound punches it was all over.

The victory is the biggest of the 26-year-old's career, with fight fans predicting Souza would walk over Whittaker to garner a shot at the middleweight title ahead of the fight.

The kink in Souza's armour has always been his striking. If he doesn't get the fight to the ground, it's hard for him to win and his opponent exposed the huge hole.

Whittaker called out middleweight champion Michael Bisping but that will be awhile as the champion is set to face Georges St-Pierre sometime in 2017.
