Running through the middleweight division, Israel Adesanya is running out of opponents. Though Dricus Du Plessis became an option, plans soon changed. Now, Adesanya defends the belt against Sean Strickland at UFC 293 on September 9.  The event takes place at Qudos Bank Arena in Australia and airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Adesanya made his MMA debut in 2012 following a kickboxing career where he won over 70 fights. Joining the UFC in 2018, he quickly rose in the ranks, beating Kelvin Gastelum in 2019 for the interim UFC middleweight title and Robert Whittaker a few months later to become champion. The latter fight happened in Australia.

”The Last Stylebender” defended the belt five times before losing it against Alex Pereira at UFC 281. However, he won the belt back at UFC 287 in April, knocking Pereira out.

Strickland made his pro debut in 2008. A King of the Cage middleweight champion, the 32-year-old joined the UFC in 2014 and is 14-5 with the promotion. He had his six-fight win streak snapped by Pereira and went back to the drawing board. He has gone 2-1 since and is on a two-fight win streak.

In July, Strickland beat Abusupiyan Magomedov via TKO. Now, the man with the colorful personality competes for gold.
