History could be made at UFC 284 as Alexander Volkanovski attempts to become just the fifth dual champion in UFC history on February 11. The Aussie, competing in his backyard in front of family and friends, faces a tough challenge in UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

The fight for Makhachev’s lightweight title will be inside the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.

Makhachev is on a twelve-fight win streak and is 13-1 since joining the UFC in 2015. The 31-year-old has eleven wins via submission and has absorbed the least significant strikes (0.95) per minute in UFC history. Makhachev recently beat Charles Oliveira in October to claim the then-vacant UFC lightweight title.

The champion will be going into this fight without a familiar face. Former champion Khabib Numagomedov will not be in his corner for the bout as he looks to move away from MMA. However, they did create a game plan for the Volkanovski fight before Khabib's absence.

Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, has won all 12 fights in the UFC. Beating Max Holloway for the title in 2019, he has defended the belt four times. He is now looking to challenge himself at lightweight.

On the ground, Makhachev is a dangerous fighter. Volkanovski is a hard-hitting striker. Something has got to give. The latter broke down how he believes the bout will go and told The AllStar his skills can outlast Makhachev’s offensive capabilities.

“I think it’s gonna be more of a standup battle,” Volkanovski said via MMA News. “Obviously, he’s gonna shoot earlier with my movement and all that…he’s gonna be a little bit uncomfortable with the timing I have and all that sort of stuff…

“First round’s gonna be a bit more of a fight I reckon, clinches involved, all that type of stuff. Maybe a little bit more messy. And then the second round, I think it’s gonna be more on the feet and I’m gonna put hands on him… but, I’m preparing for five rounds and for bad positions…and that’s why I feel like I’ll get the finish.”
