Ian Garry has opened up about his ambitions of becoming a two-weight champion. He has been out of the cage since a clash with Michael Page in June.
The fight was viewed as arguably the biggest test of Garry’s career thus far, and he passed. A few months after that victory, the 27-year-old is now set to return against Shavkat Rakhmonov.
The bout between the two welterweight contenders will be the co-main event this Saturday at UFC 310. Furthermore, the winner of Rakhmonov vs. Garry will get a guaranteed shot at current UFC champion, Belal Muhammad.
However, Garry is already looking far past the welterweight division. Speaking in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, he spoke about a potential move to middleweight. He said:
“I’m a young kid who’s dreamed of being here, who wanted to see his face on billboards. [I] wanted to do shows against the scariest people in the world. I’ve said to you before, how my ideal scenario is I fight and beat Shavkat, and then win the welterweight title.”
He added:
“I go up to middleweight, I fight Khamzat [Chimaev] and win that belt too. I’m not afraid of any man, I know how talented I am. I know the gifts God gave me.”
