The Yankees have lost yet another heavy hitter to the injured list.
Luke Voit landed on the 10-day IL Tuesday with an abdominal strain suffered during the team's win over the Red Sox in London on Saturday.
General manager Brian Cashman had expressed "concern" about Voit's injury Sunday, acknowledging at the time that Voit was feeling "a little discomfort" but saying no tests had been scheduled. Apparently that changed once the team returned home from England.
Now Voit will be sidelined past the All-Star break, and also lose out on any chance that he might be added to the American League roster as an injury replacement after a stellar first half of the season.
The 28-year-old is slashing .280/.393/.509 with 17 home runs and 50 RBIs, having shouldered a significant part of the offensive load for the Yankees with Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge spending much of the first half on the injured list.
Voit is now the 22nd Yankee to land on the IL this season, continuing a stunning string of injuries that New York has managed to weather while steadily building its lead in the AL East. The Yankees enter Tuesday's Subway Series opener against the Mets with a 6 1/2-game lead on the Rays, who they will visit in a four-game set this weekend heading into the All-Star break.
In other roster moves Tuesday, the Yankees recalled infielder Mike Ford and left-hander Nestor Cortes from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned right-hander Chance Adams to Scranton.
