Pedro Strop saved the Cubs in their crazy 7-6 win over the Dodgers Wednesday night, but that was after he had to cut short his conversation with police over his stolen car.
Strop told reporteers he was dealing with the aftermath of the stolen car all the way through the fourth inning, when he was giving the police his report.
He said when the Cubs rallied with a six-run sixth inning, which saw Javier Baez and Jason Heyward each hit three-run home runs with two outs, he knew he needed to shift his focus away from the car.
"I was still giving them my information in the fourth inning, and I told them, 'I have to go. I might have to pitch,'" Strop said, via ESPN.com. "I didn't know if I was going to get in the game. But I had to be ready."
After the sixth inning, the Cubs tacked on another run to make the score 7-3, but the Dodgers made a comeback with three runs of their own in the eighth inning.
Strop entered the game in the ninth, getting Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner to hit into a double play that ended the game in the Cubs' favor, 7-6.
Strop said all he knew about his car before he left police hanging was that it had been involved in a police chase earlier in the day. He added that he didn't let the unfortunate events distract him as he closed out the top of the ninth inning.
"It was a crazy day," Strop said. "I'm still dealing with it."
