MLB wrap: Brewers snap Cardinals' six-game winning streak, continue to hang around NL wild-card race image

St. Louis has been one of the toughest teams in MLB to beat in August, posting a 16-9 record on the month with an 8-2 record in its last 10 games. But the Brewers were able to snap the Cardinals' six-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory Wednesday and it couldn't have come at a better time.

The Brewers are barely holding on in the race for the National League Central as they trail St. Louis by 5 1/2 games in the division. Milwaukee is also 3 1/2 games behind the Cubs for second in the division and the second wild-card spot.

By virtue of Wednesday's win, in which Keston Hiura smoked a home run and the Brewers handed Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty his first loss since July 7, Milwaukee was able to make up some ground in the division and kept pace in the wild-card race, as Chicago also won Wednesday.

Milwaukee scored a run in three of the first four innings and used a nine-strikeout performance from Jordan Lyles to earn the victory.

Milwaukee has three games left against the Cardinals and seven against the Cubs, so absolutely nothing is decided in this division.

Studs of the Night

Phillies second baseman Cesar Hernandez went 3 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in a 12-3 win over the Pirates.

Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani tossed seven scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over the Marlins.

Jason Kipnis went 2 for 4 with two home runs in the Indians' 4-2 win over the Tigers.

Dud of the Night

Noah Syndergaard gave up 10 runs (nine earned) in three innings in the Mets' 10-7 loss to the Cubs.

Highlight

Rangers center fielder Delino DeShields Jr. robbed Angels outfielder Brian Goodwin of a home run.

What's Next

Rays (76-58) at Astros (87-47), 2:10 p.m. ET — Zack Greinke (4-0, 2.45 ERA) hasn't lost yet in his time with the Astros, so it's going to be a challenge for the Rays to take a game in this series. The Astros have won the first two by a combined score of 23-7.
