Mets GM says Tim Tebow is 'one step away' from MLB call-up image

Tim Tebow will start next season with the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs and Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said the former NFL quarterback is now "one step away" from the big leagues.

"I believe that if Tim is good enough to help us out at the Major League level he'll play there," Van Wagenen said Wednesday during an interview with WFAN's Mike's On. "He's not going to want a courtesy shot at the big leagues. He's going to have to earn it."

Van Wagenen is also Tebow's former agent and added that if he can outplay his competition at this level, he'll make his way to the MLB club.

“If Tim Tebow is the best offensive player in Triple-A at that point, he’s going to be in (manager Mickey Callaway's) lineup,” Van Wagenen added.

If he were to get the call up, he wouldn't be the only big name new to the Mets roster. New York recently acquired closer Edwin Diaz and infielder Robinson Cano in a trade with the Mariners.

Tebow batted .273 with six homers and 36 RBI in 84 games in 2018 for Double-A Binghamton before suffering a broken bone in his right hand that required surgery and ended his season in July.

He hit .301 in June and was batting .340 at the beginning of July before suffering the injury.
