David Wright will join the Mets front office as a special advisor to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen and COO Jeff Wilpon, the team announced Monday.

Wright, who spent his entire playing career with New York, retired after last season.

“David Wright is an iconic Met and will be forever remembered for his contributions on the field as well as his numerous charitable endeavors,” Wilpon said in a statement. “We are thrilled he will remain close to the Mets family and will be a great asset in this new role.”

The 36-year-old former Mets captain made seven All-Star teams and won two Silver Sluggers during his time with the team. But, his career was derailed by back and neck injuries, which forced him to miss most of 2016 and all of 2017.

Wright returned for two games last season before retiring.

“I will always be tremendously grateful for the way the fans treated me because playing in this city and for this team was a dream come true,” Wright said in a statement. “I look forward to contributing and taking on the challenges of this new role.”

New York finished 2018 with a 77-85 record and missed the playoffs for a second straight season.
