The Royals have signed free-agent catcher Martin Maldonado to a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

The Athletic reported Saturday that Maldonado's deal would be worth $2.5 million with the possibility of an additional $1.4 million in incentives.

Maldonado, 32, played for the Angels and Astros last season, hitting a combined .225 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs in 119 games. He won on a Gold Glove in 2017 with the Angels.

Kansas City was in the market for a catcher after Salvador Perez had season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday. The Royals cleared a roster spot for Maldonado on Monday by putting Perez on the 60-day disabled list.
