The Giants' general manager position might remain vacant until next offseason, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday.

The Chronicle reported Farhan Zaidi, who assumed the role as Giants president of baseball operations two weeks ago, said he is more concerned with finding the right candidate than in the timing of the hire. He also said that if the team waits there will be a larger pool of potential GM candidates.

“Being additive, bringing in the right person as GM and having that kind of structure, was the original vision,” Zaidi said. “But it also depends on identifying the right person, and potentially talking to and hiring the right person.

“We’re more focused on identifying the right person than the timing sensitivity.”

In late September the Giants parted ways with GM Bobby Evans after four seasons. At the time, Giants president and CEO Larry Baer told reporters the team was seeking a "next-gen" baseball person for the role.

The Giants have posted consecutive losing seasons, the first time that has happened since 2007-08.

For now, Zaidi is confident the front office can cover all the duties typically performed by a general manager.

“There’s a very strong front office in place, obviously, to do the immediate business at hand as far as the major-league roster: free agent signings, trades,” Zaidi told the Chronicle. “We have a pretty good infrastructure in place.”
