Two of baseball's perennial powers clash on Friday night, with the Dodgers and Astros beginning a three-game set at Minute Maid Park.

After limping into the All-Star break, Los Angeles has emerged on the other side resembling the dominant team we've come to expect. The Dodgers won their first five games after the hiatus, and their beleaguered rotation received reinforcements with the return of Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw.

Shohei Ohtani continues to rake, spurring an offense still without Mookie Betts (fractured hand). Ohtani entered play on Thursday leading the Dodgers with 30 home runs, 73 RBI, and a 1.022 OPS, the third-highest mark in baseball behind Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.

Despite an atypical early season funk, the Astros have surged to the top of the AL West, erasing a 10-game deficit in lightning-quick fashion. As of Thursday, Houston held a one-game lead over Seattle, in part because the Astros took two of three from the Mariners in the first series following the All-Star break.

Jose Altuve (.307 AVG) and slugging Yordan Alvarez (20 HR, 54 RBI) are the familiar faces driving a stalwart Astros lineup. Left-hander Framber Valdez, the staff's ace amid a slew of injuries, is lined up to get the ball on Friday night.
