Cognac brand Hennessy revitalises a Hong Kong basketball court with street art as part of a global artistic initiative following its appointment as the official spirit of the NBA.
A part of the 'Hennessy In the Paint' initiative to connect street art with basketball culture, the revamped basketball is the first of its kind in Asia. Enlisting the help of local street art non-profit HKwalls, organiser of local street art festival of the same name, Hennessy commissioned Hong Kong-based Japanese graffiti artist TAXA to breathe new life into a basketball court.
A dilapidating rooftop court in Tsing Yi Estate gets a fresh coat of paint and a striking new look; TAXA transforms the court with a mural that touches on elements of his aesthetics and the city. Also taking part in the project is shopping mall operator People's Place, which previously revitalised several basketball courts and other sporting facilities in public housing estates across town.
The shades of blue and turquoise that dominate the court and are accented with pink swatches. The artist painted two arms reaching from the centre to both ends of the court, symbolising going for the hoops.
The city's famous skyline is depicted in silhouette, giving this rooftop court a uniquely Hong Kong flair.
Hennessy's art-centric project sets out to create and nurture a sense of community among basketball fans and players. Revitalising the space provides a hub by linking together street art and one of the world's most popular sports.
Previous to this rooftop court in Hong Kong, the 'Hennessy In the Paint' project will make its way around the world. Earlier this year, Hennessy unveiled the Zoo Lake court in Johannesburg, South Africa as part of the global artistic initiative.
The rooftop basketball court is set to welcome the public on May 18.
