In an otherwise disappointing season for South Sydney, which saw coach Michael Maguire sacked towards the end, Burgess was a reliable performer.

Making 21 appearances, he crossed for five tries, ran for 2988 metres from 339 runs, made 703 tackles and completed 35 offloads.

The 28-year-old England international was also awarded the medal in 2014 and 2016.

Though Burgess took home arguably the biggest award, teammate Angus Crichton stole the show as he took out the Jack Rayner Players’ Player award, the Roy Asotasi Members’ Choice award and The Burrow Appreciation award.

At just 21 years of age, Crichton had a breakout 2017 after debuting in 2016, ending his first full season with seven tries.

Other winners on the night included Cameron Murray, Damien Cook, Gabe Hamlin and Campbell Graham.
