South Sydney big man Sam Burgess has been placed on report midway through the second half of his side's 20-16 defeat of the Canterbury Bulldogs.

After trailing 16-10 and running out from their own line, Burgess took a hit-up running in the direction of Morris before making contact around the Bulldogs centre's throat.

Referee Ben Cummins ruled that Burgess made unnecessary contact with Morris' throat while running the ball into the Bulldogs defensive line.

The hit flung Morris backwards onto the ground with the 31-year-old in considerable pain in the minutes after the incident before he was consoled by a trainer.

Burgess was then put on report and penalised for the contact with Morris.

The incident is likely to undergo review from the Match Review Committee.

It was one of many penalties blown throughout the game by the men in yellow which to no surprise angered fans, commentators and individuals on social media.

Tensions threatened to almost boil over when Souths gave away a penalty for holding down Bulldogs winger Marcelo Montoya too long.

Montoya took offence to the conduct and threw the football at George Burgess' head for a good old falcon.

It brought both teams together for some typical 'jersey-grabbing' before referees broke them up.

The final penalty count finished 14-10 in favour of Souths.

Earlier Bulldogs halfback Kieran Foran put his name down in history for the wrong reasons after missing the unmissable conversion against South Sydney.

As Foran took the conversion, 10 metres out, dead in front, he kicked the ball below the crossbar.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 12-0 leads thanks to a double from Morris who combined with his brother Brett on both occassions to cross the line.

But the Rabbitohs launched a comeback with Cameron Murray scoring the match-winner as he charged on to a ball from teammate John Sutton, bursting through the defence and forcing his way to the line with just four minutes remaining.

Fullback Moses Mbye failed a HIA test after being concussed early in the game while Aiden Tolman didn't return after leaving the field early with a syndesmosis injury.
