As of next year, it'll be 20 years since Tommy Raudonikis' two-year reign as New South Wales coach came to a swift end.

Winning three of the six Origin games he coached including a 1997 series win, the former Western Suburbs halfback certainly didn't give the worst account of himself during a tumultous tenure.

Currently 67 years of age and yet to coach in the new millennium however, Raudonikis has surprised many by not only calling for Laurie Daley to be sacked but for him to replace him.

"Mate, he's got to go," Raudonikis said on Brisbane's 4BC program.

"I thought, mate, he didn't prepare those players well, and I thought after that first win, mate...I just think they didn't grab them by the throat.

"Queensland, they'll do it all the time. Great competitors, great passion, and they won on the bell.

"That was our coach's fault.

"And players, too. Players have got to take responsibility no doubt. But the coach made some bad decisions.

"I'm going to put in for it.

"I'm dead serious. I've coached State of Origin."

As it stands, Raudonikis has some convincing to do if he was to get the gig with Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler the current front runners if Daley was to leave the position.

Which at this stage, despite three straight series defeats, still is an if.
