Queensland have replaced injured half-back Daly Cherry-Evans with Michael Morgan in their State of Origin squad after the former failed a fitness test on Tuesday.

The Maroons confirmed on Wednesday that North Queensland Cowboys number seven Morgan has been promoted to Mal Meninga's squad with the 23-year-old been called up on Tuesday as cover.

"Queensland Rugby League has today confirmed North Queensland's Michael Morgan will replace Daly Cherry-Evans in the Maroons' line up for Game I of the State of Origin series," a statement on the Maroons website read.

"Cherry-Evans was today ruled out with a shoulder injury."

Reports emerged on Tuesday that Cherry-Evans, who has been battling a shoulder injury but has yet to miss a game for Manly in the NRL, had failed a fitness test after being named in Queensland's squad for the first match of the series against New South Wales.

Origin I will be held in Sydney on May 27.
