Melbourne's last taste of Origin came in 2015 when 90,000 fans saw New South Wales beat Queensland in Game II.
NRL boss Todd Greenberg revealed the decision to take Origin back to Victoria and is unsurprisingly hoping for a good turnout.
"State of Origin is the biggest sporting event in Australia and it will be fantastic to see it back at the MCG,” Greenberg told the Herald Sun.
"We hope to see NSW and Queensland fans traveling to Melbourne as well as locals enjoying the best of rugby league in game one."
