With a young team that continues to struggle, the Knights are one team that could certainly use the experience of Cooper Cronk when he leaves Melbourne at the end of the year.

Set on a move to Sydney but undecided on whether he'll play on, Cronk has inevitably attracted plenty of interest with Newcastle coach Nathan Brown admitting he's reached out to the Maroons halfback.

Though, as he himself has admitted, the Knights aren't in Sydney, that hasn't stopped Brown from getting in contact with Cronk and explaining what his plans are for the club.

"I spoke to (Cronk) and he sees what we are trying to do here," Brown said.

"He acknowledges that we are starting from a long way back in the youth and he feels he could contribute.

"But Cooper Cronk and the Knights have got two big problems. One: Will he play? And two: Newcastle's not Sydney."

Realistic about the chances of Cronk moving to the Knights, Brown conceded that simply having the halfback sign with a Sydney club could benefit his side.

"It can have a good effect for us anyway because no-one has any money in Sydney so it will force a bit of movement," he said.

"So Cooper playing in Sydney would be great for us anyway."

Though recently dropped to reserve grade, Newcastle's most recognised halfback Brock Lamb looks set for a return to the side.

"It's a bit of an ongoing thing but I'm sure Brock will be back in the short term," Brown said.

"Whilst he's improving a lot, we thought a game back in reserve grade would be good for him.

"He's got one or two small things to work on."
