The latest information on the rat inside the Brisbane Broncos dressing room appears to point towards Josh McGuire as the source of the leaked Matt Gillett story.

Earlier, we reported that a leak indicating Matt Gillett was being shopped to the Dragons was believed to have been a set-up by Brisbane players to find a locker-room mole. Former Wallaby Greg Martin made the claims about internal issues at the Broncos when speaking on Triple M, claiming senior Broncos players posted a picture of a rat on the suspected mole's locker prior to a training session in the lead up to the St George game.
Tonight, on Triple M’s The Rush Hour, McGuire was identified as the source – but not in the manner that fans may have assumed.
According to host Dan Ginnane, “There’s a suggestion that Josh might not be doing much wrong here – he’s just telling his manager certain things. It’s the manager that’s going and telling people.”
The Australian reporter, and Triple M regular, Brent Read agreed: “I’m not sure if Josh McGuire is the alleged rat but people close to him are thought to have gone to the media – it wasn’t him directly.”
While the dressing room scuffle – reportedly between McGuire and Ben Hunt - has been downplayed by Broncos personnel, former Origin legend Ryan Girdler can’t see the benefit in the Broncos prop intentionally leaking stories to the media.
“Is Josh McGuire off contract this year? I’m just wondering why he benefits,” he said on The Rush Hour. “It’d be a real issue if Josh was going to the media directly but players need confidence and sometimes they speak to their manager or their partner about different things and I’m not sure Josh was aware his manager would tell anyone.”
While Wayne Bennett wasn’t happy with the players’ performance during their 26-0 drubbing of the Dragons, it’s hard to imagine there’s too much disharmony in a team still managing to get the win.
