Defending champion Stan Wawrinka breezed into the last 16 at the Australian Open with an easy win over Jarkko Nieminen on Saturday.

The Swiss fourth seed was untroubled during his 6-4 6-2 6-4 victory on Rod Laver Arena.

Wawrinka, who has enjoyed a good run to start his title defence, finished with 55 winners.

It was his forehand hitting the bulk – 25 – of those, but also the side responsible for most of the unforced errors (26 of 39).

As he has early in the tournament, Wawrinka picked his moments – and capitalised when they came.

He created set points in the 10th game and on the Nieminen serve, converting the second with a powerful forehand winner.

Wawrinka served at a lowly 43 per cent in the first set but he conceded just three points on serve.

Nieminen paid for his 12 unforced errors, three of which came in the decisive 10th game.

Wawrinka was in cruise control when he broke for a 2-0 lead in the second set.

Nieminen sent a forehand wide as Wawrinka took the second set in 36 minutes.

Wawrinka's level went up during the set, with 21 winners to his name.

In a surprise, Nieminen broke to take a 2-1 lead in the third set.

But Wawrinka hit back immediately and then set up three match points with a forehand return winner in the 10th game.

When Nieminen netted a forehand, the match was over and Wawrinka moved into the fourth round.
