After taking the tennis world by storm last year, Eugenie Bouchard is growing accustomed to players raising their levels against her.
Bouchard was a first-round winner at the Australian Open on Monday, accounting for Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2 6-4.
Friedsam was aggressive throughout, but seventh seed Bouchard clocked up 20 winners at the Margaret Court Arena to set-up a second-round showdown with Belgian Kiki Mertens.
With Bouchard now a prized scalp following her rise to prominence in 2014 - which saw her reach the Wimbledon final and the last four at both the Australian and French Opens - the 20-year-old is bracing herself for life as the hunted, as opposed to being among the hunters.
"I think the first round is always tough, especially at the beginning of the season. So I'm happy I was able to stay pretty solid," Bouchard said after her win over Friedsam.
"I think she played pretty well. That's something I guess I have to expect. Now often players will kind of go for it and play a really good level against me.
"Yeah, I'm happy I stayed calm out there and pretty solid."
Bouchard, who lost to eventual champion Li Na in the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year, added: "I was just kind of focused on every point.
"It was definitely kind of a tougher back-and-forth battle in the second.
"But I just stayed calm and I knew once I got a chance I would try to take it, and that's what I did at the end of the second. I had to kind of weather the storm a little bit when she'd serve well or go for her shots.
"A couple times she could string together a couple good points."
