There will be a new name on the Internationaux de Strasbourg trophy this week after defending champion Monica Puig was knocked out by Samantha Stosur in the first round.
Puerto Rico's Puig was given a tough draw against the third seed and bowed out of the WTA International event with a 6-0 6-3 defeat.
Puig claimed her first WTA Tour title by beating Silvia Soler-Espinosa last year, but there will be no repeat of that success following Stosur's straight-sets triumph in an hour and nine minutes.
The 21-year-old Puig was only able to force one break point, which she won in the second set, as Stosur conjured up a dominant display on the clay in which she broke five times to breeze into the second round.
Madison Keys lived up to her billing as top seed by winning an all-American first-round encounter with Christina McHale 6-4 6-3.
McHale reached the semi-finals of this tournament last year, but made an early exit 12 months on as Keys made an encouraging start to her last tournament before the French Open.
There was some early concern for Keys when she lost the first two games and, although McHale opened up a 4-2 lead, the youngster fought back to take the first set.
Just the one break in the sixth game of the second set proved to be decisive, with Keys moving into the second round and ending McHale's hopes.
Second seed Jelena Jankovic is also through to the second round as a result of a 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 success against Irina Falconi, while Alize Cornet - seeded fourth - beat Wang Qiang 6-3 6-3.
Fifth seed Zarina Diyas was blown away in the final set to suffer a 5-7 6-4 1-6 defeat to Alison Riske, but there was no early exit for another seed in the form of Coco Vandeweghe as she saw off Oceane Dodin 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.
Wildcard Francesca Schiavone was too strong for Lauren Davis, while Olga Govortsova was a break up leading Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 2-1 when she was forced to retire, and Kristina Mladenovic beat Pauline Parmentier 6-2 4-6 6-1.
