Second seed Maria Sharapova delivered another brutal dispatch of a seed, thrashing Peng Shuai 6-3 6-0 at the Australian Open.

The 2008 champion sauntered past 21st seed Peng in just one hour 15 minutes on Rod Laver Arena, improving to a 5-1 head-to-head record against the US Open semi-finalist.

Her dismissals of Peng and Zarina Diyas (seeded 31st) combined (two hours 16 minutes) took less time than her thrilling victory over qualifier Alexandra Panova (two hours 32 minutes) alone.

Peng, bearing heavily strapped thighs, was off the boil on centre court, and handed Sharapova victory courtesy of 29 unforced errors.

Sharapova will face Eugenie Bouchard in a blockbuster quarter-final.

The first break points and service break came in the sixth game, Sharapova taking it to lead 4-2.

Her second-round scare aside, Sharapova had only been broken twice in two matches - but Peng had two break points when the Russian netted rudimentary ground strokes.

Sharapova was, perhaps, hypnotised by the down-the-centre tennis Peng prefers, as she belted the ball flat and hard and straight.

Peng could not convert any of her first four break-point chances in the seventh game, but a Sharapova double fault gifted Peng the break back on the fifth attempt.

Only serving at 48 per cent in the first set, Sharapova still took it with a love hold as her dominance of the world number 22 continued.

While Peng has previously beaten Sharapova - in Beijing in 2009 - their past two clashes at majors went in the significant favour of the five-time grand slam winner.

Not pushed beyond 6-4 in any one set by Peng at Wimbledon 2011 or the 2012 French Open, Sharapova sustained that record with aplomb.

Peng simply found the net far too often - her 20 forehand errors a notable statistic - while she also only forced Sharapova into five mistakes.
