There was no early wedding present for Andy Murray as world number one Novak Djokovic secured his fifth Miami Open title on Sunday.
Murray will marry long-term partner Kim Sears next week, but any hopes of returning to Scotland on the back of a tournament victory were ended by an all too familiar foe as Djokovic won 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-0.
The Serb is the first player complete an Indian Wells-Miami Open double on three occasions as a result of his latest success and has now won his last seven games against Murray.
Djokovic beat Murray in the Australian Open final, as well as in the last four at Indian Wells and the British number one was unable to gain revenge.
Murray will move above Rafael Nadal to go third in the world rankings on Monday despite his defeat, but that will be little consolation as he turns his attention to his wedding speech.
The Scot started promisingly as Djokovic struggled to get going and he went 2-1 up by winning the third game with a smash after working the ball around the court with great effect.
He was unable to press home that advantage, though, making it all too easy for Djokovic to break back immediately before taking advantage of a poor service game from the defending champion to regain the upper hand and lead 4-3.
Unforced errors were costing both players and Murray was again pegged back straight away for the second time. The next four games went with serve and it was Djokovic who raised his game in the tie-break to race into a 4-0 lead before duly going a set up.
Murray showed great character to save four break points in the third game of a second set and the British number one set up a decider when he broke Djokovic to love, levelling the match with a cross-court forehand
A furious Djokovic grabbed his towel from a ball boy and vented his fury at the umpire, but responded by taking his frustration out on Murray in the same manner which he did in the first grand-slam final of the year in Melbourne.
Murray had no answer as the eight-time slam champion took only 43 minutes to win the final set with ease to maintain his outstanding form, wrapping up the victory with a lunging volley.
