Veteran shooting guard Joe Johnson is nearing a deal with the Rockets after completing his contract buyout with the Kings on Sunday (AEDT), according to ESPN.com.

Johnson, 36, started just three games for the rebuilding Kings this season, averaging 7.3 points per game. He averaged at least 14 points per game in every season from 2003-2015.

The Rockets are among the NBA's best teams this season, so Johnson's role figures to be minimal behind James Harden and Eric Gordon.

Johnson, a seven-time NBA All-Star, was selected 10th overall in the 2010 NBA Draft.

The report stated that he had committed to the Rockets before completing his buyout, which could mean he likes Houston's chances to win it all this season.
