Spring is around the corner and Sydney will kick their carnival off a little early with the running of the Group 1 Winx Stakes at Royal Randwick on August 20th.

Formerly known as the Warwick Stakes, the name was changed back in 2018 to honour the legendary career of 25-time Group 1 winner.

It was also bumped up from Group 2 status in the same year, with the 'Mighty Mare' winning the inaugural event.

Mo'unga took out the 2021 edition of the race, while Verry Elleegant won in 2020.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the G1 Winx Stakes.

WHAT IS THE WINX STAKES?

Formerly the Warwick Stakes, it is a Group 1 event contested over 1400m.

The name was changed to honour the legendary mare Winx, who won 25 Group 1s in her career - including this race three times.

DID WINX EVER WIN THE WINX STAKES?

Yes, three times.

Winx took out the G2 Warwick Stakes in 2016 and 2017, before the race was changed to her name in 2018 and bumped up to G1 level, where she took out the inaugural event.

WHEN IS WINX STAKES 2022?

This year's Winx Stakes raceday will take place on Saturday, 20th August.

The feature race of the day will be the G1 Winx Stakes, which will take place at 2pm.
