Royal Randwick is set to steal some of the attention away from Flemington on Melbourne Cup day this year, with Racing NSW announcing a new multi-million dollar race.
The $2 million race will be named 'The Big Dance' and will be run on the first Tuesday of November.
In an effort to prolong the day of festivities for punters, it will take place after the 'race that stops a nation'.
Although the prize money on offer is smaller than the $8 million Melbourne Cup, the winnings will be larger than all the other races run at Flemington on the same day.
The race will also extend the increasingly popular The Everest carnival, which has attracted a new legion of younger fans.
Racing NSW boss Peter V’Landys officially announced the race in a press conference on Wednesday.
With a name inspired by the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament in the United States, 'The Big Dance' will give the winners of 25 Country Cup races across the state the chance to compete.
A headline musical act will perform following the event, as Royal Randwick aims to get more use out of the new Winx Stand.
V’Landys also revealed a new race in ‘The Five Diamonds’, which will be a $2 million 1800m race for 5-year-old horses, to be run at Rosehill Gardens on 5th November 2022.
