Two-time Caulfield Cup runner Sir Isaac Newton has been euthanised following a heavy fall on day one of the Warrnambool Carnival.

The eight-year-old gelding was leading the Carlton Draught Maiden Hurdle at the last jump when he fell, sending jockey Steve Pateman off his mount.

Sir Isaac Newton attempted to regain his feet before returning to the turf and laying motionless, while Pateman did his best to protect himself from the other horses.

$3 Inayforhay eventually won the race, completing a last-first move for trainer Paul Preusker and hoop Lee Horner.

Post-race, thoughts turned to the wellbeing of the downed horse and jockey, with Racing.com reporting that trainer Ciaron Maher was with Sir Isaac Newton on the track.

Unfortunately the son of Galileo suffered a broken shoulder and was euthanised shortly after, while Pateman was transported to hospital with a concussion.

Pateman was due to partner the well-backed Zed Em in the Grand Annual later in the day, seeing Aaron Lynch called in as a late replacement.

It was a heartbreaking end for Sir Isaac Newton, who after a big move a long way from home, looked a chance to salute for the first time in 1410 days.

While under legendary trainer Aidan O'Brien, he ran fourth in two group ones in Europe, before starting in another ahead of making the move to Australia.

During his time in Australia, he started in two Caulfield Cups - finishing seventh in 2016 - a Turnbull Stakes and a host of other group races.
