10-time winning sprinter Gytrash has been retired after failing to overcome the latest niggle suffered an injury riddled career.
The six-year-old Gordan Richards-Damien Moyle gelding had 28 starts, winning nearly $4.5 million in prize money.
A win in the 2020 Black Caviar Lightning and minor placings in the Everest, William Reid, Newmarket Handicap and the Goodwood (twice) will go down as his most significant achievements.
Richards explained the circumstances leading to his retirement to Racing.com.
“It’s the same knee, that near-side front knee that he’s had two operations on, he’s got issues there again," Richards said.
“He jumped out well on Tuesday morning and pulled up okay but I didn’t think that was him so I got the vets to check him out and x-ray him.
“As much as we tried with it, we couldn’t patch it up so we’ve decided to retire him.”

Richards paid tribute to Gytrash for the journey they'd been on together.
“He was a $40,000 horse that won $4.5 million, he was just a dream,” he said.
“It’s bittersweet – if he was a three-year-old you’d be devastated but he’s six, rising seven and he’s taken everyone on such an amazing ride.
“I’m proud of the horse.
“I’m here at the yearling sales now trying to find one to replace him and I don’t like my chances.”
