Golden Eagle 2023 betting preview, tips and form guide

At the top of the field will be recent Everest runner Hawaii Five Oh ($4.80), who has produced an impressive spring campaign - including a placing in the G2 Premiere Stakes, but will step up in distance to 1500 metres.

With three wins and five placings in 11 career starts, the Gai Waterhouse-trained stallion is clearly a horse with plenty of ability and will come into the Golden Eagle at peak fitness.

Amelia's Jewel ($3.40) had a disappointing run last start while finishing ninth in the G1 Toorak Handicap at Caulfield, but had previously taken out two-straight Group 2 events in Melbourne.

The four-year-old Perth product has won nine of 12 career starts and should be able to bounce back, especially with experienced jockey Damian Lane in the saddle, but will also be having it's first start at this trip.

Also at single-figure odds is Kiwi mare Legarto ($7.50), who will be having just her second start in Australia and previously won the G1 Australian Guineas earlier this year and has performed incredibly well over the mile.

Osipenko ($12) has received support in the betting market and has been competing against both classier and older horses this preparation and will drop back in distance from a 10th-placed finish in the G1 Turnbull Stakes last month.

Chris Waller's Queensland Derby winner Kovalica ($9) will have to overcome a wide gate but has been solid throughout the spring, finishing a close second in the G1 Epsom Hanidcap behind stablemate Rediener (scratched).

Japanese import Obamburumai ($11) is also in the mix but will be having his first start on Australian soil and is resuming from a spell, but has won both previous career starts while first-up.

Rounding out the other main chances in the race are Pericles ($12), who finished third in the Silver Eagle last start and took out the G2 Tramway Stakes prior, as well as former Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile ($31).

THE LEG UP'S EXPERT TIP: Amelia's Jewel ($3.40)

“It’s times and margins if she’s at her best, they won’t beat her, she’ll be a mile too good for them.

“That win at the Valley two back, in track record time, she sat on a hot speed and she won in a hand canter and then last start, she started $2.40 in a Toorak, carried 56 kilos.

“Camp have come out and said that she had an illness and went off her food. I can only trust that.

“Let’s forget the Toorak run. They say always forgive a good horse one bad run and her best is clearly superior to these.”

THE SPORTING NEWS' EXPERT TIP: Legarto ($7.50)
