Sydney will officially kick off their Everest Carnival on Saturday 17th September, with the running of the Group 1 George Main Stakes at Royal Randwick. 

Verry Elleegant took out the 2021 edition of the race, while other winners of the race include Winx (three times) and Lonhro (one time). 

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the G1 George Main Stakes. 

WHO IS GEORGE MAIN? 

The race is named after George Main, a former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, as well as a racehorse breeder and sheep runner.

The first race was held in 1945. 

WHEN IS GEORGE MAIN STAKES 2022?

This year's George Main Stakes raceday will take place on Saturday, 17th September. 

The feature race of the day will be the G1 George Main Stakes, which will be run at 3.15pm, before Nature Strip returns to action in the Group 2 The Shorts at 3.55pm.

The prize money for the Group 1 George Main Stakes sits at $1 million. 

Connections of the winning horse will take home $500,000.
