The Everest 2023 betting preview: Tips, odds and analysis for $20 million race at Randwick image

This weekend's $20 million TAB Everest promises to be one of the most exciting in the race's six-year history, with some of the most talented sprinters headlining a packed field at Royal Randwick.

Think About It looks set to start the race as favourite and rightfully so, with the talented Joseph Pride-trained gelding winning 10 of 11 career starts, while the likes of I Wish I Win and Private Eye sit behind it in the market.

Last year's winner Giga Kick was scratched and ruled out for the entire spring carnival, opening the door for some wild-card runners to enter the fray.

The Sporting News has all the latest betting odds, tips and analysis for The Everest below.

The Everest betting preview, tips and runner-by-runner form guide

With some of the best sprinters in the country in action, this promises to be a bumper race at Randwick. The Sporting News has all the runner-by-runner analysis and form below ahead of the $20 million event.

1. I Wish I Win

A deserved favourite with an incredible career record to date, winning six starts from 17 appearances and placing in a further nine races. The five-year-old gelding narrowly missed last start over 1400 metres in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes, but will drop back to the trip that brought him success in the TJ Smith Stakes earlier in the year. The inside barrier may hinder his chances slightly, but most are still expecting to it factor into the finish.

2. Private Eye

A proven Group 1 winner and placed in this same race last year with an eye-catching run. The six-year-old gelding had an impressive first-up victory in the Group 3 Shorts four weeks ago, toppling a couple of other runners, before trialling nicely prior to Saturday's big race. One of the best horses in the race and will be hard to hold out late.

3. Think About It

Sits near the top of the market and rightfully so, winning 10 of 11 career starts to date including two Group 1 triumphs. The talented five-year-old emerged with a narrow victory first-up in the Premiere Stakes a fortnight ago and looks well-placed to take this race out after drawing a nice barrier.

4. Mazu

A wide draw and recent form would indicate the Snowden-trained galloper is unlikely to factor into the finish. Hasn't received any support in the market and was well-beaten in his only start this preparation.

5. Overpass

One of the more underrated horses in this race out of the Bjorn Baker stable, the five-year-old has trialled well in the lead-up to this race and finished second in the Group 3 Shorts. With a proven record over the 1200m trip and at a decent price, it could be a solid each-way bet.

6. Buenos Noches

Perhaps not the most well-known runner in this race, but has produced three wins and three placings from nine career starts. Finished less than a length behind the winner in The Shorts and has trialled soundly, as well as picking up a win in another Group 3 event in August.

7. Hawaii Five Oh

Had a brilliant performance in the Premiere Stakes, finishing just behind one of the favourites in the race after a bland first-up run. The four-year-old stallion has a good career record at 1400 metres but is certainly in the mix for his event on recent form.

8. Alcohol Free

A surprise inclusion and sits towards the bottom of the betting market. Has produced six wins from 17 career starts but will need significant improvement against this crop of competitors.

9. In Secret

With six wins from 12 career starts including two Group 1 triumphs, the Godolphin-trained star has had a couple of reasonable performances early in this preparation but should be in peak fitness for this event. The four-year-old mare will be boosted by the addition of Zac Purton in the saddle, but will be hindered by drawing the widest gate.

10. Espiona

A former breakout star that went through a slight rough patch, the mare has bounced back to form this spring, taking out the Group 2 Golden Pendant and narrowly missing out on the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes in early-September. Brings plenty of class to the race and has drawn nicely, making it an intriguing option for punters.

11. Shinzo

This year's Golden Slipper winner will look to follow in the footsteps of Yes Yes Yes and become just the second three-year-old to colt to take out The Everest. The prized Chris Waller-trained colt has two wins and two placings from five career starts, but was well-beaten first-up in the Group 1 Golden Rose three weeks ago.

12. Cylinder

Boosted by a nice draw, the only other three-year-old in the event has been impressive early in the spring, taking out the Group 2 Run To The Rose and finishing a narrow third in the Group 1 Golden Rose. An impressive Godolphin-trained colt has four wins and four placings from nine career starts and is right in the mix for the $20 million clash.

THE LEG UP'S EXPERT TIP: Buenos Noches ($20) or Cylinder ($9)

Buenos Noches

"I think this is the horse with the most potential in the race. As much as I didn’t expect to be putting a Matt Smith runner on top, I think Buenos Noches could be the horse this year that really just blows them away." - Patrick Allendorf

Cylinder

“This is your winner. I was against him in the Golden Rose, but he is super... He’s drawn perfectly just to stalk the speed. He gets blinkers on for the first time which will improve him a length or two and he gets in with only 53 kilos.” - Nick Lloyd
