The Everest 2022 tips
Note: Tips made prior to Lost And Running's scratching.
The overwhelming favourite for this year's TAB Everest is defending champion Nature Strip ($1.75), who took over the world earlier this year with a win at Royal Ascot.
The eight-year-old superstar has had just one start this preparation, taking out the Group 2 Shorts four weeks ago, but has been trained by Chris Waller with this race as its grand final. The heavy or soft track won't impact him, with the only real query being the widest barrier.
Nature Strip is undoubtedly the best horse in this race, and there would have to be plenty go against him to come up short and miss out on a second Everest title.
That being said, the favourite isn't the only horse in the race and there are plenty of good chances for punters looking at an each-way bet.
Eduardo ($9.00) has been the long-time sparring partner for Nature Strip, and has beaten the champion three times during his career. The nine-year-old Joseph Pride runner won the Group 3 Concorde Stakes first-up this preparation, before finishing fourth in The Shorts. He has also had one trial since his last run a month ago, winning at Warwick Farm.
Masked Crusader ($9.50) is known to fly home late and will be third-up this Saturday, while the likes of Mazu ($17) and Private Eye ($16) certainly can't be discounted at their price.
Racing expert Ryan Phelan told The Sporting News that his tip and the real X-factor in the race is three-year-old Jacquinot ($9.50), who won the Golden Rose three weeks ago and looks in tremendous form.
“I’m looking for the X-factor, and that X-factor is Jacquinot," he said.
"This horse was absolutely breathtaking last start in winning the Golden Rose. That win actually reminded me of Yes Yes Yes, the only other three-year-old who has won The Everest to date.
"I think he should get a nice run in transit and be very strong at the finish."
Giga Kick ($18) will come into the race with an undefeated record but faces a huge jump in competition, while the likes of Ingratiating ($51) and Overpass ($51) would need to produce career-best performances to factor into the finish.
For those punters who like to play the exotics, a potential trifecta bet should include Nature Strip, Eduardo, Jacquinot and Mazu.
But it's the favourite Nature Strip that is going to be hardest to beat on the day and with the price drifting since the barrier draw, it's almost impossible to look past him.
FINAL TIP: Nature Strip ($1.75 with TAB)
RYAN PHELAN'S EXPERT TIP: Jacquinot ($9.50 with TAB)
