Derby Day: Warning blitzes field to claim Victoria Derby image

Warning has claimed the 2019 Victoria Derby after a magnificent run in wet conditions at Flemington.

The Anthony Freedman-trained gelding hit the front with 250 metres to go and would not be caught in the testing conditions, racing away from Southern Moon and Soul Patch to claim the prestigious race.

The win marks Oliver's sixth Derby, capping off his brillant day after a win in the Wakeful Stakes cemented his name in the record books as the most successful jockey in Spring Carnival history with 74 wins.

Oliver was pleased to have secured the win for the Freeman stable, having started his racing career as an apprentice for Anthony's brother Lee.

"You can't beat that excitement that it gives you to be in a competition like this," Oliver said after the race.

"We got a great group of young jockeys coming through, we push each other along and we have some great banter.

"A few of the younger ones probably can't wait for me to move aside.

"It's great to have a winner for the Freedie's where it all started for me 30 years ago."

Warning takes home $1.2 million for the connections, with Southern Moon and Soul Patch securing $360,000 and $180,000 respectively.
