Cross Counter has stormed home to win the 2018 Melbourne Cup ahead of fellow British horses Marmelo and A Prince of Arran.

The result gives jockey Kerrin McEvoy his third Cup victory, while Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby becomes the first English trainer to claim Australia's most famous racing silverware.

It caps a remarkable spring carnival for McEvoy, who also guided Redzel to a second-straight win in The Everest last month.

McEvoy's two previous Cup triumphs came riding Brew in 2000 and then Almandin in 2016.

For the Godolphin stable, Cross Counter's performance is the culmination of more than 20 years of attempting to win 'the race that stops the nation'.

"I'm delighted. This is everybody's dream. I just can't sink it in now," trainer Appleby told Channel Seven 's Jason Richardson after the race.

" ... Coming into the day, this horse ticked a lot of boxes. I'm just delighted. It was some ride."

Like last year's winner, Rekindling, Cross Counter is a northern hemisphere three-year-old.

Meanwhile, pre-race favourites Yucatan and Magic Circle finished in 11th and 16th respectively.

Magic Circle's larger-than-life owner Marwan Koukash, who promised to strip down to a pink G-string if his horse saluted, was humble in defeat.

He tweeted: "Congratulations to @godolphin on winning the Melbourne Cup. Sorry Magic Circle did not run his race. Very much enjoyed the experience and will for sure be back. Well done to @FlemingtonVRC on a fantastic show."

Another fancied chance, The Cliffsofmoher, suffered a fractured shoulder towards the beginning of the race. The horse was unfortunately euthanised on-track.
