Under Armour’s reworked the midsole of the HOVR Machina 3 and, though still a weighty shoe, if longevity and comfort is your thing over land speed records, you could be in luck.

The big talking point from UA’s press release is the dual-density foam: a firmer responsive forefoot paired with a softer heel. Is it too good to be true?

The dual-density claim has been made before and, while it sounds good in theory, the overlap of the densities can be problematic.

Let’s dive right in.

The claim

By blurring the lines between race day performance and everyday high-mileage training, this shoe continues to meet the needs of the consumer by providing the latest in tech and innovation.

Wear and tear: how they feel on a run

First, it’s only fair that there’s a slight disclaimer: I have feet the approximate width of a barge and am more tranquilised ox struggling through its attempted escape from capture rather than a graceful antelope.

I need comfort, support and, because of the glacial pace, something that will look good on the feet as passersby have enough time for several fleeting looks.

Encouragingly, the HOVR Machina 3 delivers on all three aspects. The rejigged midsole delivers the softer landings it promises without feeling like i’ve landed on a pile of comfortable, but momentum-absorbing, pillows.

While it’s marketed as a runner, the stability from the shoe could definitely support cross-training. That’s thanks to the plastic TPU heel clip that extends around the heel on both sides.

The colourways available in Australia vary from lairy to laidback but could definitely be expanded. Check out what’s available at Under Armour’s AU store.

Does it support connectivity?

The Machine HOVR 3’s can be connected to UA MapMyRun for real-time form coaching tips based on your cadence, pace and stride. An embedded sensor tracks, analyses and stores detailed running metrics to inform ways to improve performance
