Open Championship 2022 Round 1 results: Cameron Young stars on blustery day at St. Andrews image

Round 1 of the Open Championship got off to an enthralling start Thursday morning as American Cameron Young rolled through the Old Course at St. Andrews with relative ease. The 25-year-old, who tied for third at the PGA Championship in May, notched four birdies in his first six holes.

Young's stunning start set the stage for an impressive overall showing. The American kept his composure and control, two attributes that aren't always associated with a rookie playing in one of their first majors, and ended the day 8 under par.

Young's 64 represented the second-best opening-round score in Open Championship history. Rory McIlroy (St. Andrews, 2010) and Phil Mickelson (Royal Troon, 2016) bested him by shooting 63.

McIlroy mostly kept pace with Young on Thursday. The Northern Irishman carded a 6-under 66, which made for a little Open history — McIlroy became the first golfer to post scores of 66 or lower in the first round of different Open Championships.

Englishman Robert Dinwiddie finished the first round tied for third with his 67. England amateur Barclay Brown was superb as well, finishing at -4. Brown became the first amateur to finish Round 1 in the top five since Tom Lewis in 2011.

The Sporting News provided live updates and highlights from Round 1 of the 2022 Open Championship. Below are the results of all the Thursday action.

Open Championship 2022 live updates, highlights from Thursday's Round 1

(All times BST)

9pm: Round 1 of the Open Championship is over. Here's how the leaderboard looks:

1: -8: Young (F), -6: McIlroy (F), -5: Smith (F), Dinwiddie (F), -4: Brown (F), Kitayama (F), Westwood (F), Kennedy (F), Hovland (F), Gooch (F), Johnson (F), Scheffler (F)

8pm: Tiger Woods has always impressed on Hole 14 of St. Andrews. He did it once more on Thursday, sinking a birdie on 14 to drop his score to  +5.

7:35pm: American Dustin Johnson put on a strong display at St. Andrews during Round 1. The LIV Golf defector sank a birdie on Hole 18, bringing his first round score to -4, tied for the best score among golfers who started in the afternoon.

7:20pm.: Unprecedented amount of success at the Open Championships for Rory McIlroy. The North Irishman is the first player in Open history to begin two different tournaments with an opening score of 66 or lower, according to Twenty First Group's Justin Ray.

7:10pm.: Let's take a look at the top of the leaderboard. American Cameron Young leads the way, carding an impressive 64 score in Round 1. He's followed by Rory McIlroy, who got off to another strong start at a major tournament, and New Zealand's Cameron Smith.

Leaderboard update: -8: Young (F), -6: McIlroy (F), -5: Smith (F), -4: Brown (F), Kitayama (F), Westwood (F), Kennedy (F), Hovland (F), Gooch (F), Scheffler (16)

6:50pm.: American Sahith Theegala put on a show on the front nine of the Old Course. Theegala, who replaced the injured Daniel Berger in the field, went -3 through nine holes. Heading into the back nine, he's the joint lowest out on the course at the moment.

6:30pm.: Americans Talor Gooch ends his day with a birdie on 18. Gooch pulled himself into a seven-way tie for fourth place. Englishman Barclay Brown right in the mix, despite being just an amateur.

6:15pm.: Tiger Woods seems to be finding a bit of a rhythm. That's back-to-back birdies on Holes 9 and 10 for the three-time Open Championship winner. He now sits at +4 through 10 holes.

6:05pm.: Impressive chip shot for par by South Korean Kim Si-woo. Nice celebration as well. He's had a really wonderful showing at St. Andrews so far. Still sits at -3 as he approaches the end of Round 1.

6pm.: As we head into the evening here in Scotland, let's have a quick update at the top of the leaderboard then, where American Cameron Young currently leads the opening round of the 2022 Open Championship.

Leaderboard update: -8: Young (F), -6: McIlroy (F), -5: Smith (F), -4: Brown (F), Kitayama (F), Westwood (F), Kennedy (F), Hovland (F).

5:45pm.: The conditions around St. Andrews are definitely continuing to improve so expect to see plenty more birdies and maybe an eagle or two being made before the close of play this evening.

Another golfer to keep an eye on is South Korean Kim Si-woo who is putting together a lovely opening round. He's -3 through 16 holes and has a birdie opportunity at the 17th.

5:35pm.: American Russell Henley eagles the 14th to move up to -1. That's one of few eagles we've seen today despite the favourable conditions at St. Andrews.

5:25pm.: It's all gone a little bit quiet for Scheffler who sits T4 on the leaderboard through 12 holes at St. Andrews. He's birdied just one of his last seven holes after picking up three birdies in-a-row on the 3rd, 4th and 5th.

5:15 p.m.: Well, Rahm made his birdie at the 6th, as did his playing partner Spieth with both now sitting on -2. It's more misery a hole ahead for Woods though who double bogeys as he slips to +6 already through seven holes.

5:10pm.: Just like at the 2nd earlier, Rahm puts his second shot right on the money at the 6th to give himself another golden opportunity at birdie. On the 12th, Dustin Johnson sinks his third birdie through his last four holes as the former world no.1 moves into the top ten on the leaderboard at -3.

5pm.: We've already seen some phenomenal shots during today's opening round at St. Andrews but this one on the 17th from major debutant John Parry could just about be the pick of the bunch..

4:50pm.: After his tough start at St. Andrews, Woods makes par at hole five before ripping a big drive down the middle of the sixth fairway. That's a bit more like it from Tiger who needs to battle back from +4 already.

4:40pm.: A quick check up with some of the big names who started their first rounds towards the end of the day then. Spieth and Rahm, who are playing in the same group this afternoon, both sit at -1 through four holes, though it's proven a more difficult start for Cantlay and current U.S Open champion Fitzpatrick who both sit at +1 after the first four holes.

4:30pm.: As the last group gets underway on day one here on the Old Course at St. Andrews, let's have a little recap.

It's American Cameron Young who leads the 2022 Open Championship so far, finishing his opening round at -8, though McIlroy is sat right behind him on -6 in the clubhouse after sinking a birdie on the 18th.

4:20pm.: It goes from bad to even worse for Woods who bogeys again on the fourth to take his score to +4. This could get seriously messy if he doesn't find a bit of luck sometime soon. It's better news elsewhere for world no. 1 Scheffler who birdies at the ninth to head into the turn at -4 and T4 on the leaderboard.

Video only available in the UK:

4:10pm.: Englishman Paul Casey has enjoyed a storming front nine on the Old Course and has already made four birdies. He's currently T4 as it stands, not bad for a golfer who's missed all three majors so far this year..

4:00pm.: Spieth and Rahm both knock fantastic iron shots to within a few feet of the pin on the third, however both of them miss their respective birdie putts. Two big chances wasted there for a pair of former major winners.

3:50pm.: Well it's really not the start that Woods will have been dreaming of late last night as he bogeys again at the third to take his score to +3 through three. It's already proving to be an uphill battle for the three time Open champion.

3.45pm.: McIlroy gets into the clubhouse at -6! That's a fantastic first round score for the man who came into this competition as the favourite for victory. It could have been even better as his 85ft eagle putt on the last finishes just a couple of inches short of the hole. A birdie will do though for the Northern Irish golfer.

Reigning Open champion Morikawa also birdies the last to finish E for the day, though Schauffele misses his chance on the last and finishes on -3.

3:40pm.: Now onto the third, Woods has hit his tee shot out to the left which will leave him another difficult up and down to the green. Meanwhile on the 7th, world no. 1 Scheffler, who's one of the favourite to claim the Claret Jug this year, has missed a solid birdie opportunity. He remains at -3 so far.

3.30pm.: Leaderboard update: -8: Young (F), -5: Smith (F), McIlroy (16), -4: Schauffele (16), Brown (F), Kitayama (F), Westwood (F), Kennedy (F)

3.20pm.: Bad start for Woods! There was so much anticipation ahead of Woods' opening round, but he's started on a double bogey! It's not quite McIlroy at the first at Portrush, but it's not far off! He got too steep and the drop after ending up in the burn put Woods on the back foot.

3.15pm.: In the water! That's not what Woods would have wanted at the first! There was a divot in his drive, there was some sand in the air, it went high, landed short and ended up in the Swilcan Burn. Whoops!

3.05pm.: Woods tees off! The three-time Open winner gets the biggest reception of the day at the first tee. Fitzpatrick is also a favourite with the crowd at the Old Course. Woods' swing has looked very good across the practice days, and he has been practicing a lot! Woods frequently talks about how he loves this course. It plays to his strengths!

2.55pm.: Poulter was booed at the first tee, presumably due to his controversial involvement in the LIV Golf series. However, the Englishman was spiky when asked about it after he finished his round. "I actually thought I had a great reception on the first tee, to be honest. All I heard was clapping," he said. Whatever you say, Ian...

2.45pm.: Westwood holes a birdie at the 18th to finish a very respectable opening round on four under. That's a good result given that he recorded a double bogey on the second hole! Els is still up there on four under, but he has bogeyed the 16th to fall back.

2.35pm.: Woods is on the range ahead of his tee time in just under 30 minutes. You can see that the wing is starting to pick up around the course. Matt Fitzpatrick is also in Woods' group after winning his first major at the US Open not so long ago. A of anticipation of seeing these two play together!

2.20pm.: Barclay Brown has been the surprise package of today's opening round at the Open with the English amateur finishing on a score of four-under to leave him tied-second. "I didn't have it (The Open) on my schedule," he said after getting back to the clubhouse. But yeah, qualified ten days ago, a couple of weeks ago." Just as well he changed his schedule!

2.05pm.: Young is still the man to beat on his Open debut (he carded an opening round of 64 and is in the clubhouse). The 25-year-old has a good track record of starting well - he finished joint-third on his PGA Championship debut only last month.

1.55pm.: Leaderboard update: -8: Young (F), -5: Smith (F), Els (13), McIlroy (12), -4: Brown (F), Kitayama (F), Westwood (15)

1.40pm.: Scottie Scheffler on the tee! The world number one is next up to start his Old Course campaign. The American is known for being a fan of links golf and has been in excellent form in 2022, winning the Masters in April and finishing runner-up at the US Open. How will he perform this week?

1.30pm.: What a round this is turning out to be for Els! Of course, the 52-year-old has an excellent record in this competition (he won at Muirfield in 2002 and at Royal Lytham in 2012 as well as 13 top 10 finishes) and is currently tied in second on five under after the 12th. This is becoming one of the storylines of the day!

1.15pm.: It's a par for McIlroy at the 11th, and a par for the other two (Morikawa and Schauffele) in his group as well. The early momentum that the Northern Irishman built up over the first five holes of his opening round has faded somewhat.

1:00pm.: Recap! Missed the morning and early afternoon action? Not a problem - let's recap things! Young is our leader on seven under after 16 holes. McIlroy has enjoyed a good frontline - he's currently third in the leaderboard on four under. Splitting Young and McIlroy on the leaderboard is the Australian, Smith - he's five under and has actually just finished his round. Keep an eye on the veteran Ernie Els - he was joint-second for a hole or two!

12:50pm.: McIlroy isn't able to take advantage of the short par four at the ninth, but that is still an excellent frontline from the Northern Irishman. He can be pleased with how he is playing at the moment.

12:45pm.: Opportunity missed! That was a real chance for our leader, Young, to go -8, but he produces a nervous birdie putt on the 14th. Meanwhile, Smith suffered a similar fate on the 16th when he had a look at a birdie - his putt certainly could have been better. He didn't read the line, but we all know how difficult these greens are to read!

12:35pm.: Leaderboard update: -7: Young (13), -4: Brown, Kitayama (18), Smith (15), McIlroy (8)

12:25pm.: A difficult 13th for Robert MacIntyre derails his charge as he makes a double bogey six there. It was a similar story for Tommy Fleetwood who also struggled on the same hole. However, MacIntyre still has a change to make amends. He just needs to get that out of his system.

12:15pm.: Three-in-a-row! McIlroy has now bagged birdies in each of the last three holes! He has four in his first seven! Young has enjoyed a blistering start, but McIlroy is moving up behind him. He made an opening round 63 at the Old Course back in 2010. Can he get close to that again?

12:10pm.: Birdies everywhere! There's a lot happening out there at the moment! Ian Poulter has just finished a round of 69 with a birdie at the 18th. Cameron Smith has just pushed himself up the leaderboard with a birdie of his own on the par-four 12th. He's now -7!

12:00pm.: Tiger Woods will tee off at 2.49pm. The three-time Open champion has a special affinity with St Andrew's and has been in the town for about a week. He even played a round on Saturday evening as the light started to fade over the Old Course. Can he win here for a third time?

11.45 am.: McIlroy has made a good start. He knocks it in easily enough for a second birdie at the fifth and he's now -2. Of course, the Northern Irishman is a former Champion Golfer of the Year, but that was eight years ago and he's never won at the Old Course before. He's on his way! His putter looks good at this early stage.

11.30 a.m.: Glorious shot by Young on the 11th, who is now deservedly clear as the leader on five under. The Open debutant lands a birdie to lead by two.

It would be remiss not to provide a picture of those Daly trousers we mentioned.

11.15 a.m.: McIlroy, Morikawa and Schauffele all par the fourth while DeChambeau and Daly provide plenty of entertainment - not least Daly's trousers, which appear to have flowers and skulls on them.

Brown ends one of the stories of the opening morning by carding 68. The 21-year-old from Sheffield first played the Old Course at St Andrews at the age of 10.

11 a.m.: While Hovland has continued his fine start, Australian Cameron Smith has also gone to four under, while Poulter has stuttered a little and is now two under.

Two birdies for Koepa mean he is under par, and Bob MacIntyre is two under. McIlroy seems in a jovial mood despite sending a birdie attempt from distance just short.

10.45 a.m.: Bucket-hatted amateur Barclay Brown continues to have one of the best days of his career, remaining a shot behind the leaders.

Min Woo Lee and Kim Joo-hyung currently share the lead at four under par. Poulter is three under.

10.30 a.m.: Hotly-tipped 24-year-old Norwegian Viktor Hovland is in a glitzy group with Shane Lowry, the 2019 Open champion, and reigning US PGA king Justin Thomas.

Hovland leaves his illustrious counterparts in the shade with a birdie, which both Lowry and Thomas fail to pull off.

10.20 a.m.: McIlroy almost immediately provides a highlights contender on the first green, sinking a 55-foot putt to go one under.

Schauffele leaves a birdie putt comfortably short and misfires with a par save to ensure that he's already dropped a shot. Morikawa is on par.

10.15 a.m.: McIlroy is off in a group with Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele, who claimed the Scottish Open title last week.

DeChambeau is hitting form now. The 2020 US Open hit his third successive birdie a little earlier.

9.58 a.m.: Here comes McIlroy. "It's a good position to be in," the 2014 champion tells BBC Sport when he's asked about being the shortest odds. "I'd much rather be the favourite than not because it means that you're playing good golf.

"My performances in the majors this year and have been so much better than they have in the last few years. That gives me so much encouragement, going forward."

9.45 a.m.: Four players are setting the pace on three under following Poulter's piledriver eagle putt on the ninth, with Triangle hitting three birdies in his first three holes. Wu and Kim Joo-hyung join them.

9.30 a.m.: Ian Poulter takes a share of the lead! The Englishman was reportedly booed as he teed off because of his involvement in LIV Golf, and he's answered his critics in impressive style with a huge shot, holing from distance on the par-four ninth.

That means Poulter is three under alongside Tringale and American Brandon Wu, who is taking part in his second Open.

9.15 a.m.: Former US Open champion Simpson made the first birdie but the American has just ended up in the rough, ending up with a bogey after reacting admirably to chip himself out of a desperate position.

Tommy Fleetwood is out on the course and attracting plenty of attention. He's in Hoshino's group with his Ryder Ryder Cup partner Francesco Molinari, the 2018 champion. All three have started with three consecutive pars.

9 a.m.: The early leaders are all two under at the moment: Webb Simpson, Lucas Herbert and Cameron Tringale are the pacesetters so far.

Californian Tringale is continuing the excellent form that saw him set a course record 61 at the Scottish Open last week. A word, too, for Barclay Brown, an amateur who is a shot behind.

8.30 a.m.; Brooks Koepka teed off at 8.03 a.m., and he's not made the best of starts — the world number 20 has missed the second fairway, landing a shot in a bush.

Organisers have confirmed that Rikuya Hoshino, of Japan, will replace the injured Rose, who was the runner-up in 2018.

8.15 a.m.: Scotland's Paul Lawrie hit the first shot at 6.35 a.m. today, and we've seen Justin Rose pull out at the last minute with a back injury.

Bryson DeChambeau also missed a birdie putt a few moments ago, sending a shot narrowly wide after a tremendous shot to reach the green.

8 a.m.: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' coverage of the 150th Open! We'll have all the latest action for you ahead of the start of play as the likes of favourite Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods begin their campaigns.
