The tournament's 2015 winner, Day nailed three birdies early but stumbled on the back nine to fall slightly off the pace with Swede Alexander Norén leading the way at 11-under.

Marc Leishman is the next closest Aussie sitting at seven-under, tied for twelth, with Australian Open winner Cameron Davis two shots further back.

American Tiger Woods also survived to fight another day as he moved to three-under after an inconsistent round.

The 14-time major winner is making his first PGA Tour appearance since missing the cut at this event last year.

The final round at Torrey Pines will be decided on Sunday (local time) with a prize pool of just under $7 million on offer.
