After a dramatic finish to the 2022 U.S. Open last weekend – and with seemingly-endless drama surrounding Saudi-backed tour LIV Golf – the PGA Tour resumes Thursday with the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT. Sporting News will be covering this event all week, but right now we are focusing on the betting side of the tournament.

Last week, both our U.S. Open preview and betting columns listed Matt Fitzpatrick as a strong bet at +2200. Let’s ride that momentum and pick some winners today!

2022 Travelers Championship Best Bet

Justin Thomas (+1100)

Thomas has demonstrated a diverse skill set this PGA Tour season, and that level of across-the-board strength will come in handy at TPC River Highlands. He struggled with tough conditions at the U.S. Open, and missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but the 29-year-old has been otherwise masterful of late. He won the PGA Championship, finished third in the RBC Canadian Open, and tied for fifth in the AT&T Byron Nelson. Thomas also finished tied for eighth at the Masters.

Thomas’s tee-to-green game (which ranks third in the TOUR) has been paramount to his success. His SG: Approach sits sixth at .795, and his off-the-tee and around-the-green consistency have ranked solidly as well. All said, Thomas currently holds the No. 3 spot in total shots gained (2.035). He has played the Travelers Championship three times – including once via a sponsorship exemption during his amateur days – and he tied for third at the tournament in 2016. He has never finished lower than 17th at Travelers, and could very well win his second PGA Tour victory this season – and 15th of his career – in Greater Hartford this weekend.

2022 Travelers Championship Best Value

Sam Burns (+1800)

Burns has been sizzling this year, already the winner of three PGA Tour events (the Sanderson Farms Championship, Valspar Championship, and Charles Schwab Challenge). His strength with approach shots and consistency around the green should help him immensely on the short TPC River Highlands course.

We got a taste for Burns’ grit at the Schwab, where he posted a -5 in the final round to force a playoff with best friend and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He beat Scheffler on the first playoff hole, sinking an incredible 38-foot birdie putt from off the green. Burns became just the second player in tournament history to win after entering the final round at least seven strokes back (Nick Price, 1994).

We have seen plenty of reasons why Burns ranks No. 2 in the FedExCup Standings, just between Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. His SG:ATG and SG: Total rank fourth in the TOUR, and his putting and tee-to-green sit in the top 18. With such a well-rounded start to the season, Burns yields the most value of any of the favorites at +1800, double the odds of McIlroy at the top of the board.

2022 Travelers Championship Top Sleeper Pick

Aaron Wise (+4800)

Wise has assembled a respectable 2021-22 season, placing in the top 10 four times so far. He made some noise at the U.S. Open last weekend, where his long putter was a popular topic. Last August, the University of Oregon alum addressed his putting issues by starting to use the long putter of his college coach, Casey Martin. The unusual move has paid off considerably, most recently when he finished runner-up at the Memorial Tournament on June 5. Wise has the approach game needed to win TPC River, and his putting continues to improve. He’s a good sleeper candidate at a modest +4800, and an even better bet at +180 to finish in the top 20.

2022 Travelers Championship Player and Parlay Props

Best Bet to Finish Top 20: Harris English (+330)

In addition to Wise at +180, 2021 Travelers champion Harris English at +330 makes a great bet to finish in the top 20. The tall Georgian stormed onto the Travelers scene last year, bolstered by his around-the-green proficiency and strong putting. English’s game clearly favors short courses like TPC River, so don’t be surprised if he defends his championship admirably.

Player Prop Parlay: Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas Both Finish Top 5 (+900)

We’ve already established how much we like Thomas this weekend, so pairing him with the No. 1 player on the TOUR and getting +900 for them to each finish top five seems too good to be true. Scheffler looks every bit the best player in the world – he’s doing everything well and not letting anything faze him. There’s plenty of risk involved in this kind of a bet, so stick to modest wagers topping out in the $50-$75 range.

2022 Travelers Championship Top Nationality Prop: Rory McIlroy Top European (+125)

Like Scheffler, McIlroy has been at the top of his game lately. Nobody in the world has been better tee-to-green (1.888 SG) or in Shot Gains: Total (2.282). He’s been quite strong with his approach and around-the-green shots, and he continues to read greens well with his putting. Just look at McIlroy’s recent results, starting with the most recent: fifth at the U.S. Open; first at RBC Canadian Open; eighth at PGA Championship; fifth at Wells Fargo Championship; second at Masters.

Simply put, McIlroy is the best bet of any of the nationality props, especially at a course he will be playing for the fourth time (his last Travelers was 2020, when he finished 11th). Americans historically fare best at TPC River, so if you don’t want to bet McIlroy +225 top five but want better odds than +100 top 10, this could be a good way to get in some modest Mac action.
