F1 Hungary results: Daniel Ricciardo returns, Oscar Piastri strong again for McLaren image

Daniel Ricciardo made his return to the Formula 1 grid on Sunday night (AEST) at the Hungarian Grand Prix after six months on the sideline.

AlphaTauri's newest driver finished outside of the top 10 but recovered well from an early incident.

Meanwhile, fellow countryman Oscar Piastri continued his strong form in an upgraded McLaren car, scoring points for the second race in a row.

Daniel Ricciardo makes solid return to F1 grid

Plenty of eyes were on Ricciardo as he made an awaited return to the grid.

The Australian was brought in mid-season by AlphaTauri to replace the struggling Nyck de Vries, making his 2023 debut at the Hungaroring.

He out-qualified his teammate Yuki Tsunoda in a promising Saturday session and lined up in P13 for the race.

However, his Sunday got off to a rough start, dropping down to P18 after a first-lap incident.

He was hit from behind by Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou before bumping Alpine's Pierre Gasly, with the Frenchman then colliding with his teammate Esteban Ocon.

Both Alpine cars retired shortly after, with Zhou handed a five-second penalty.

Ricciardo then battled at the rear of the field for the majority of the race before a clever pit stop saw him undercut a number of cars and return to his original spot of P13.

His AlphaTauri teammate Tsunoda finished two spots behind in P15.

Oscar Piastri scores points again for McLaren

Whilst fellow countryman Ricciardo took much of the spotlight, it was Piastri who shone again on-track.

The young gun impressed in upgraded McLaren machinery at Silverstone a fortnight ago and came close to a podium again in Hungary.

Beginning the race fourth on the grid, the Australian started confidently, pushing his way into P2.

McLaren's pit-stop strategy saw Piastri drop behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris midway through the race before he was overtaken by Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez in a charging Red Bull.

He held his own for the entire race though, coming home in a strong P5 and collecting more important points for his team.

The result also marks his first time scoring points in consecutive races in F1.

Max Verstappen wins Hungarian Grand Prix as Red Bull makes history

Red Bull made F1 history as Max Verstappen secured his seventh straight victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Beating Lewis Hamilton off the start line and into the opening corner of the race, Verstappen strolled to yet another race victory as his Austrian team sealed their 12th win in a row - a new record in the sport, breaking McLaren's run of 11 in 1988.

The Dutch driver was joined on the podium by McLaren's Lando Norris who again impressed to come home in P2 and his teammate Sergio Perez, who put together a great recovery drive from P9 on the grid.

Norris' P2 finish also saw him take back-to-back podium spots for the first time in his career after he finished second at Silverstone two weekends ago.
